Crime

Recent Significant Cases

R v James Harvey – Gordon represented this American businessman who following a fatal accident whilst driving on the wrong side of the road on a business trip in the UK, was charged with causing death by dangerous driving. Ultimately a compromise was achieved with a plea to causing death by careless driving, and a non-custodial sentence secured, allowing the man to stay out of custody, remain in his employment and return to his family in the USA.

R v Urry – Secured the acquittal of this Defendant and financial advisor who was charged along with others with multiple mortgage frauds.

Op Carwash - Leading Prosecutor in a 15-Defendant Conspiracy to Burgle/Handle and POCA case; one of the biggest cases that Grimsby CPS have dealt with in recent years. A case based almost entirely on circumstantial evidence. All Defendants were convicted, and Gordon appeared in the Court of Appeal for the CPS in relation to 4 of the Defendants. The POCA issues involved international elements.

R v DG – Gordon secured the conviction of this Defendant on 25 charges of historical rape and sexual abuse of his daughters and their half-sisters after a 7-day trial.

R v James Dalgarno – Secured the acquittal of this man on 15 counts of rape and sexual assault following a 6-day trial (hung jury) and a 7-day retrial.

R v Carol Ann Clarke – Prosecuting female predatory paedophile and former teacher against a background of no complainants (all the children were too young to have any realisation that they had been abused) on the basis of piecing together what had been said to doctors, priests and the police over 15 years and on the contents of her voluminous medical notes and personal diary entries.

R v Hippsley – Defending a 72-year-old Defendant who was charged with causing the death of his wife by the dangerous driving of his Toyota Prius. He was advised that he could run the novel defence of Sudden Unintended Acceleration (SUA). This was a high-profile case in which the DPP got involved. The prosecution aborted the trial midway through to await developments in the USA and ultimately abandoned their case.

Gordon prepared very detailed and comprehensive schedules of loss, which ultimately persuaded the M.O.D. to raise their offers of settlement to a significantly higher and appropriate level.
