Prior to coming to the Bar in 2003 Jane was a Magistrates Court Clerk and also a Senior Crown Prosecutor for 15 years working throughout Greater Manchester and London.

Crime

As a Senior Crown Prosecutor Jane managed a complex and heavy case-load which included several murders,multiple drug conspiracies and fraud. One of the murder cases involved the death of a young boy whilst an in-patient in hospital and saw Jane working closely with leading counsel and expert medical witnesses.

Jane enjoys a varied Practice engaged by both prosecution and defence. Jane attracts high calibre work and she regularly acts in serious crime such as rape and child abuse Jane is quite prepared to travel and she has worked in London, the North-East and the Midlands.

She is a Category 3 Prosecution Barrister.

Prosecution work has seen her successfully prosecute a Doctor who indecently assaulted a vulnerable teenage in-patient. The case attracted interest in the national press. Jane worked closely with a number of prosecution experts to enable effective examination of those experts and defence experts in the trial and involved her becoming fully conversant with the GMC and Nursing Council's codes of practice.

This and other such work is a progression for her having completed at degree level a thesis on the relationship between medicine and law.

Jane is one of a small number of Barristers appointed as a national External Assessor engaged to assess the advocates employed by the Crown Prosecution Service.

As a defence Barrister Jane has been involved in similarly serious crime and she regularly acts alone for defendants charged with serious sexual and violent offences such as attempted murder. Jane will often defend in multi-handed cases and represented one of twenty three defendants who was said to be part of organised football hooliganism and another charged with involvement in a conspiracy to defraud Sky by supplying chipped set-top boxes which had Jane is actively instructed to deal with sensitive cases involving mental health issues.

Jane is regularly instructed by the Borough Council for public interest immunity applications.

Jane provides instruction at seminars both in Chambers and externally through talk and debate on all areas of law but particularly in matters involving PII and the link between family and care proceedings. Jane is presently involved in a joint venture to facilitate the link between family and crime jurisdictions and encourage better joint working practices. She also acts in matters involving Customs and Excise.

Jane holds a certificate in Advanced Computers and is fully computer literate.

R -v- P (2004) 2 Cr App R (S) 343 - Court of Appeal case where general guidance was given in respect of the terms of an ASBO - instructed for the Prosecution

R -v- Ronald Castree (2007) - Bradford Crown Court - presided over by Mr. Justice Openshaw - murder of Lesley Molseed - Jane acted for Rochdale Borough Council

R -v- S (2007) Queen's Bench Division, London - An application to overrule a Magistrates Courts finding that there was no case to answer - instructed for the Prosecution
