Laura completed pupillage under the supervision of Guy Mathieson. Laura is keen to develop a practice in all aspects of criminal law, with particular emphasis on regulatory law.

Laura is regularly instructed in the magistrates and Crown court in a variety of cases. She has gained a wealth of experience dealing with offences against the person, dishonesty, public order and driving offences. Laura is often instructed in matters involving vulnerable witnesses, including youth court trials and cases involving mental health issues. Laura is also a Category 1 prosecutor and regularly prosecutes in both the magistrates and Crown court.

Prior to coming to the Bar, Laura worked for Staffordshire Trading Standards advising clients on consumer law. Laura has also worked for the Council of Europe dealing with money laundering and financing of terrorism provisions.

Crime

R v. A – Defending a Youth Court robbery trial involving four 11-year old witnesses. Defendant was acquitted at half-time after a successful submission of no case to answer.

R v. Kelly – defendant acquitted of assault and four counts of witness intimidation.

R v. Lyth – defence trial for affray for defendant with learning difficulties.

Regulatory

Laura is frequently instructed to prosecute on behalf of Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs, advising on cash forfeiture and often dealing with multi-jurisdictional issues.

Laura prosecutes on behalf of the Department of Work and Pensions dealing with benefit fraud cases.

Laura is also instructed in health and safety matters, and has defended HSE prosecutions relating to accidents at work, as well as prosecutions by the Fire Service for breach of fire safety regulations. 

Personal Injury

Laura accepts instructions in relation to personal injury and road traffic matters, and regularly appears in the county court conducting small claim hearings.
