Philip was Called in 1995 but practised from 1996 as an Advocate at a leading North West criminal solicitors practice, cross-qualifying as a solicitor in 1998. After 4½ years criminal advocacy Philip then moved to the commercial fraud and regulatory department of DLA Piper (a UK top 10 firm). Here Philip worked on a variety of large scale fraud cases and defended in a number of prosecutions and investigations brought by regulators such as HM Revenue and Customs (complex carousel fraud), Health and Safety Executive (deaths in the workplace and care home abuse) and the Office of Fair Trading (international predatory pricing scandals and high profile price fixing allegations involving five Premier League football clubs and replica shirt manufacturers).
At DLA Philip also acted for companies and individuals in proceedings brought by bodies as diverse as the Traffic Commissioner, the Rugby Football League Disciplinary Tribunal and many Coroner's Inquests (both with and without a jury). Philip’s inquest work continues at the Bar, particularly in relation to deaths in custody.

Philip left DLA in February 2003 to join St Johns Buildings. He considers his experience of having worked in both a busy criminal practice and a white-collar fraud and commercial regulatory environment, of enormous benefit to his practice at the Bar.

The 2011 edition of the Legal 500 directory notes that Philip is ‘bright, technical, personable and mature beyond his call’.

He is a Category 3 prosecutor and is instructed regularly in serious operations involving violence and drugs and offences of causing death by dangerous driving. He is an approved prosecutor for sex offences.

Philip is instructed in many appeal cases and often appears at the Court of Appeal.
